We've been keeping busy here in Durham County this summer. Durham is an enormous city with vast racial and economic diversity; therefore, we have to be very mindful as to not leave any eligible voters out of our plan. During our time organizing here, we’ve tried to build relationships with those in the Moral Freedom Summer-identified “intentional communities.” This means LGBTQ folks, Immigrant communities, Youth, Faith Institutions, and Labor communities. A group we had to add to our list here in Durham was justice-involved individuals (folks with records, formerly incarcerated people, etc.) Moral freedom summer volunteers registered voters at Southern Coalition’s Clean Slate Clinic, where folks go to find out if they can expunge their records. We have also held drives where we not only register voters, but spread the word about the struggle to end racial profiling and police brutality in our city. And we are in the process of organizing a registration drive at the Durham County Detention Center. Aside from these efforts, our actions take us everywhere from community housing neighborhoods, to libraries and grocery stores, to college campuses and the Department of Health and Human Services. We are really proud of how much ground our bright but modest group has covered in this summer. And we are looking forward to seeing how the movement grows through November 4th!
